“I Can’t Breathe”

This has been the title or slogan placed on many items of media and broadcasting the last several days. But it is one that I dare say will not get worn out anytime soon. A few days ago, I posted my own personal response to the tragic death of George Floyd. In the spirit of continuing to speak up for justice and bringing awareness, I have decided to repost my comments here on my blog site. My hope is simply to use the resources at my immediate disposal to share my heart to as many people as possible.

The following comments are taken from a post I created on my personal social media accounts on Wednesday, May 27, 2020.

I don’t understand why this form of injustice still exists in our country. My heart is so burdened over this. I don’t even know how to express the hurt I feel for this man’s family. And quite honestly, I wonder if his family would believe me if I could. I say this because this kind of atrocity simply should not be happening. It can only be happening because people have not been held accountable and because people have become numb and stopped caring.

I admit I have felt the conviction of becoming numb when it comes to issues of justice. It’s not because I haven’t cared. I think it just feels like an impossible situation. But that thinking is wrong. As a Christian, a father, a husband … as a human, I must say something. I must not be silent. I can’t be afraid of saying the wrong thing. I can’t decide that it won’t make a difference. Being silent in action and word is absolutely the wrong thing to do. It really is the worst thing to do.

I pray for George Floyd’s family because they are hurting, really hurting. I pray for my brothers and sisters across humanity who feel the insurmountable sting of racial injustice. I pray for our police force and first responders that do stand for justice that are impacted negatively by the unjust actions of those they work with. I pray for forgiveness for any and every word spoken or unspoken, action and inaction on my part that has contributed to a continuation of racism in our nation. I pray I will be a better human. I pray we all become better humans.
